Zoella Bunny Zabinski was born to a woman named Cynthia Zabinski, nee Miller, on June 19th, 1985. What was to be the best day of John Zabinski's life quickly became bittersweet- Cynthia died in childbirth, and suddenly John's world had been ripped inside out; a newborn baby, a dead wife. He was changing diapers and making funeral arrangements. Despite the crippling loss of his young wife, John did his level best to be a great parent to Zoe, even becoming a "pageant dad," where his parlor tricks for pulling rabbits out of hats made Zoe a star during the talent competitions- and happily racked up some cash for Zoe's future college fund. Zoe loved the attention- as a shy and undoubtedly nerdy child, the chance to put on big flashy outfits and do magic tricks to the awe of clapping adults was exactly what she needed. Life was complicated, but it was good, and the pair were happy and healthy- until Zoe was 13 years old, and her father was hit head on by a drunk driver.
Zoella jumped from foster home to foster home while she dealt with the heaviness of her father's death. She had become surly and despondent, unable to get past losing the only parental figure she had ever had in her life; she felt totally alone, dying for a facet to take out her misplaced energy on. An interest in magic outside of her learned parlor tricks grew, and what was originally her own personal form of rebellion became very serious when Zoe realized she was quite talented at reading tarot cards, reading palms, and even- though she'd never say this to anyone- predicting the future, in her own peculiar ways. What started as a way to pass the time and annoy her foster parents slowly sculpted itself into a new life, and though Zoe started out reading palms for five dollars during lunch, she gained a reputation for an eery talent that was highly commodifiable.
The day after Zoe graduated from her local high school, she disappeared across the planet to "find herself." Even acerbic Zoe could admit that the decision was a little contrived, but she had found a trace of the mother she'd never gotten to know out on the East coast, and she intended to follow it. After receiving Z-list notoriety for appearing on a local news episode where she accurately predicted the newscaster's wife being pregnant within the next week, Zoe was given the chance to read the cards for minor celebrities who were dying to know what their next role might be- and becuse they were so wealthy, she had no problem with multiplying her price of payment by ten. Suddenly, Zoe had enough money to do almost anything she pleased- yet she spent most of her time going through old newspapers on microfilm for a trace of her mother's life. Losing her father had made Zoe's need to understand her mother grow tenfold- she had left next to nothing behind after her death, as if she'd disappeared without a trace.
Though Zoe never particularly believed herself to be "magic," she thought her years as a pageant baby had given her the ability to read faces and movements so well that she was able to tell people what they wanted to hear- and hell, anyone could make any tarot cards vague enough to fit a certain person. Yet others gobbled it up, and though she didn't think she was a sorceress, she did enjoy her job- and it gave her something to do, to take her mind off of the things that scratched at the back of her mind. Zoe had never felt particularly called to any sort of job- as a kid, she'd considered only that as an adult she wanted to be "rich with lots of dogs"- and so she fell into the tarot reading quite easily. It gave her a chance to talk to people, it gave her loads of fantastic stories, and more than a few people would cheerfully offer to buy her a beer after a particularly joyous reading. What might have seemed ridiculous to those on the outside turned out to be what kept Zoe from losing her mind after the death of her father.
Despite the loss of both of her parents quite early in her life, Zoe never considered herself unlucky. Even in her darkest times, she considered herself blessed to have spent the thirteen years she did get with her father- and though she rarely discussed her feelings about spirituality with others, she believed that he was watching over her each and every day. Maybe he was the reason she could always hit the right notes on those tarot card readings- maybe he was guiding her hands. Even with the cards she was dealt, Zoe was always able to see the bright side of where she was and what she was given. To put it bluntly, she learned early on that she had no time for whining- there were a million other things she could be doing to better spend her time.
Besides, Zoe was having too much fun with her life to whine about what had been taken from her. After a decade of visiting various gyms, growing into her doe eyes, and feeling less and less like the gangly orphan girl she used to be, her true personality came through- a whip smart, sarcastic girl who wanted to help people, who spent most of her free time around children and animals, who loved liquor and spending too much money at Sephora- and she finally felt true to herself. Still, the inability to find information on her mother nagged at her constantly, and she continued to hover the East coast, knowing something was there to help her find the story of Cynthia Miller.

Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of magician Giovanni "John" Zatara and Sindella, a member of the mystical Homo Magi race. Zatanna is a direct descendant of the artist and magician Leonardo da Vinci, and is related to Nostradamus; Alessandro Cagliostro; the noted alchemists Nicholas Flamel and Evan Fulcanelli; and Lord Arion of Atlantis. Her cousin, Zachary Zatara, is also a magician.
Zatanna was raised by her father after her mother seemingly died after her birth. In truth, her mother, Sindella, faked her death to return to her people. She became a successful stage illusionist before she discovered her true magical powers while investigating the disappearance of her father. With the help of Batman, the Atom, Elongated Man and others, she was successfully reunited with him. She also later reunited with her mother. Her time with both parents was short, however, and, unfortunately, both of her parents were killed on separate occasions while saving her life.
Zatanna assisted the Justice League of America on a number of cases before being elected to full membership. During her tenure with the group her power levels diminished briefly, so that she could only control the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. It should be noted that this limitation was only temporary and that her magical ability was fully restored. Later Zatanna was worried about her lack of focus while using magic. She decided that her father's style of magic was wrong for her, and explored her mother's mystical heritage.
At a superhero support group run by Etta Candy, she recounted how during a failed magical ritual to search for her father's tomes, one of her past ill-cast spells summoned a shapeshifter named Gwydion, who kills her companions. The trauma of this, combined with her guilt from her mind-wipes, caused her to lose confidence in herself and she lost her powers. With the help of her new apprentice Misty Kilgore, she was able to capture Gwydion to use as her own. She eventually regained her confidence and powers, and used them to defeat Zor, a rogue Time Tailor who released the Sheeda as a plague to infect and degrade the entire universe. As a reward, the other Time Tailors allowed her one last meeting with her father, who reveals that his books were written in her, his greatest spell and gift to the world. In the final battle against the Sheeda, Zatanna cast a spell to move time and space, retroactively positioning the Seven Soldiers to overthrow the Sheeda.
Zatanna acts as a reserve member of the Justice League, aiding them from time to time when her magical expertise is needed. She declined an offer for full membership, stating her need to take a break from heroics. She is still a regular guardian against mystical threats.
